India has raised its climate ambition for the next decade with the Cabinet approving its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2031–2035 under the Paris Agreement. The revised targets mark a step-up from earlier commitments and will be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Under the new NDC, India aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 47 percent from 2005 levels by 2035, up from its earlier 2030 target. The country has also set a goal of achieving 60 percent of its installed power capacity from non-fossil sources by 2035, building on progress already made.

In addition, India plans to create a carbon sink of 3.5–4 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent through forest and tree cover. The updated targets align with India’s long-term goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070, signalling a calibrated approach that balances climate action with development priorities and energy security.
