Gujarat: Number-one by Far
Gujarat sits well ahead of other states, generating 12,166.84 MU during April–June 2026, up from 10,912.60 MU a year earlier. The 11.5 percent increase added more than 1,250 MU to the state's quarterly output. Gujarat's dominance became clearer compared with Tamil Nadu, as it generated more than twice the latter's wind electricity during the quarter. Also, the June count remained positive; generation went up from 4,928.35 MU from 4,721.90 MU in June 2025. Therefore, the western state combines two advantages: a very large wind fleet and high generation.
Tamil Nadu: A Giant but Slowed
Although Tamil Nadu remains a wind power giant, its latest generation numbers raise questions. The state generated 5,806.69 MU during April–June this year, down from 7,100. 93 MU in the same period last year, recording 18.2 percent. This is the largest absolute fall among the country's major wind producing states. Besides, June generation decreased from 3,940.46 MU to 3,345.49 MU. The decline is notable as Tamil Nadu has one of India's largest installed wind capacities. The generation numbers themselves show a decline, but they do not establish whether the change was driven by wind conditions, plant availability, transmission constraints, curtailment, commissioning patterns, or other factors.
Karnataka: Catching up with the Neighbour
Wind generation moved in the opposite direction in Karnataka. During the April–June 2026 quarter, the state generated 5,567.65 MU vis-à-vis 4,731.64 MU a year earlier, a 17 percent increase. This makes Karnataka behind its neighbouring state by only about 239 MU, despite the latter’s substantially larger installed wind fleet. This suggests that merely installed capacity alone does not tell the full story about state-level wind generation.
Rajasthan: Records Strong Growth
Among the five largest wind generation states, Rajasthan recorded the strongest growth, as its generation rose from 926.24 MU in June 2025 to 1,295.36 MU in 2026. It is worthwhile to note the state’s performance as it generated more wind electricity in the quarter than Maharashtra despite a smaller installed wind fleet. Once again, this points to the significance of generation performance rather than capacity alone.

Maharashtra: Narrates a Different Story
During April–June this year, Maharashtra posted 2,854.66 MU, an increase from 2,612.48 MU a year earlier, recording 9.3 percent growth. However, June tells a different story: monthly generation declines 8.9 percent from 1,362.03 MU to 1,240.57 MU, highlighting a single month’s data can be misleading and that the quarterly number offers a broader view of the generation trend.
Andhra Pradesh: Registers a Sharp Rise
Contrary to 2,194.70 MU a year earlier, Andhra Pradesh’s generation stands at 1,861.52 MU during the quarter, registering a quarterly decline of barely 1 percent. However, June generation rose sharply with 35 percent increase, recording 1,109.73 MU from 820.10 MU. This presents another example of the divergence between monthly and quarterly performance.
Madhya Pradesh: A Top Performer amid Minor Decline
During April–June 2026, Madhya Pradesh notched 1,861.52 MU in comparison to 1,686.11 MU in the corresponding period last year, recording a 10.4 percent. The state registered a minor decline of 640.14 MU from 657.83 MU in June. This did not hold Madhya Pradesh back from placing itself among the country’s seven states responsible for virtually all wind generation once quarterly performance is viewed.
As India is scripting its wind power generation story, seven states are emerging as actors of growth. Moreover, some states are on a growth curve, others decline, which underscores why installed capacity numbers are not enough to describe the performance of the state. Going forward, India’s wind story will have to move from how many gigawatts India adds to how effectively the existing assets are being utilised.
