The Assam government has approved the ₹50,000 crore ‘Viksit Assam’ development programme, aimed at strengthening the state’s renewable energy capacity, healthcare system and public infrastructure.
A key component of the programme is an integrated clean-energy project in Goalpara district, comprising a 30 MW solar power plant and a 25 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with 100 MWh storage capacity. The facility is planned for the Rakhyasini Jungle Block under the Matia Revenue Circle.
The combination of solar generation and battery storage will allow electricity generated during periods of high solar output to be stored and supplied when demand rises or solar generation declines. The project could therefore help improve grid reliability while supporting Assam’s transition towards lower-carbon electricity.
The wider Viksit Assam programme also includes investments in healthcare and other public-development projects. Details on sector-wise funding allocations, implementation schedules and individual contractors are expected to determine the programme’s eventual economic impact.
The ₹50,000 crore represents the overall value of the Viksit Assam programme and not the investment allocated specifically to the Goalpara solar-BESS project. A separate cost for the energy project has not yet been disclosed.
If implemented effectively, the programme could create construction and operational employment, expand essential services and strengthen Assam’s position as an emerging destination for renewable energy and infrastructure investment in northeastern India.
The next milestones include detailed budget allocations, project tenders, environmental approvals and construction timelines.
