Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India’s energy sector offers investment opportunities worth $500 billion, as he inaugurated India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 via video link and called on global investors to partner in the country’s push towards energy independence.
Addressing delegates from nearly 125 countries in Goa, Modi said India is moving beyond energy security to building an energy ecosystem capable of meeting domestic demand while serving global markets. He said India’s expanding economy is driving rising energy demand, creating opportunities across oil, gas, refining, Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), petrochemicals and clean energy.
The Prime Minister said India aims to attract $100 billion in oil and gas investments by the end of the decade and expand exploration acreage to 1 million sq km, with over 170 blocks already awarded. He also highlighted the Andaman and Nicobar basin as a new focus area for exploration.
Modi said India’s refining capacity, currently around 260 MTPA, is expected to cross 300 million tonnes in the coming years, positioning the country as the world’s largest refining hub. LNG infrastructure, pipelines, city gas networks and shipbuilding were cited as additional investment areas, with India targeting gas to meet 15 percent of its energy demand.
Referring to recent reforms, the Prime Minister said India is creating a transparent and investor-friendly environment, backed by stable policies and large-scale infrastructure expansion.
India Energy Week 2026 brings together global energy ministers, industry leaders, policymakers and investors from across the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.
