Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has entered into a Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) with Norway-based Hystar AS to work together on Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser systems for green hydrogen projects. BHEL revealed the agreement to stock exchanges BSE and NSE on August 13, 2026, pursuant to Regulation 30 of SEBI regulations.
The agreement targets to support the local manufacturing of PEM electrolyser technology and phased indigenisation in India. The development will potentially boost the public sector unit’s abilities in carrying out green hydrogen projects and aid indigenous supply chain for advanced electrolyser systems.
Through this agreement, BHEL gains access to both alkaline and PEM electrolyser technologies, allowing it to provide solutions for two key electrolyser categories used in green hydrogen production.
Additionally, PEM Electrolysers are well known for their capabilities to react quickly to developments in electricity supply which makes them suitable for integration with variable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.
By promoting indigenous manufacturing and technology development, the collaboration aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Furthermore, BHEL stated that financial details regarding the collaboration remain confidential.
