Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri stated on Sunday that transformative programmes such as the Biofuel Mission, Green Hydrogen Mission and Samudra Manthan are leading India towards an era of energy autonomy.
Puri said that biofuels provide a fresh momentum to environmental conservation, empower farmers and reduce dependence on imported fuels by creating a groundwork for India’s sustainable energy future.
He added that in the upcoming five years, the augmentation of indigenous energy production, modern technology integration, and the spirit of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, will support India to become stronger as a global energy power.
From 2014-15 up to May 2026, the ethanol blending with petrol programme has resulted in a saving of more than Rs 1.90 lakh crore in foreign exchange by substituting 310 lakh metric tonnes of imported crude oil and has generated additional earnings for farmers of more than Rs 1.6 lakh crore. Besides, it has cut carbon emissions of more than 930 lakh metric tonnes,” Hans India reported quoting official figures.
Furthermore, as per the information tabled by the government in Parliament, India’s installed renewable energy capacity has reached 288.58 GW as on June 30, 2026 from 76.38 GW in 2014. In which solar power accounts for 162.15 GW of installed capacity with 162.15 GW, trailed by wind at 57.44 GW and large hydro at 57.24 GW and bio power makes up the rest 11.75 GW.
As of June 30, 2026, total non-fossil power capacity stands at 297.36 GW.
