The Delhi government will roll out a new Electric Vehicle (EV) policy in the next financial year as part of its efforts to curb air pollution and modernise the capital’s transport system, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has said. The proposed policy aims to accelerate EV adoption by addressing cost barriers and expanding charging infrastructure across the city.
The framework will reportedly focus on financial incentives to narrow the price gap between internal combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles, in addition to the existing waiver of road tax and registration fees on EVs. A vehicle scrappage incentive is also proposed, under which owners scrapping old petrol or diesel vehicles will be eligible for additional benefits when purchasing an EV, with the aim of phasing out highly polluting vehicles from Delhi’s roads.
The policy proposes expanding charging infrastructure beyond major public locations to residential colonies, alongside provisions for battery swapping and scientific disposal of used batteries. A single-window clearance system is being planned to streamline approvals for EV infrastructure. The chief minister said consultations are underway with vehicle manufacturers, power distribution companies and scrap dealers, and the draft policy will be placed in the public domain for feedback.
