India added 6.34 GW of wind energy capacity during calendar year 2025, taking the country’s total installed wind power capacity to 54.51 GW at the end of the year, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi has said.
The capacity added in 2025 was around 85.4 percent higher than the 3.42 GW installed in the preceding calendar year. India had closed 2024 with a cumulative wind power capacity of 48.16 GW, the minister said.
On a year-on-year basis, total installed wind capacity at the end of 2025 was 13.2 per cent higher than in the corresponding period a year earlier, reflecting a pickup in project execution after a relatively subdued installation pace in 2024.
Commenting on the expansion, Joshi said the growth underscored the momentum in India’s clean energy transition. In a post on social media, he attributed the progress to policy support under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and reiterated the government’s focus on building a sustainable and self-reliant renewable energy ecosystem.
India has been seeking to accelerate wind installations alongside solar and hybrid renewable projects to meet rising electricity demand and long-term decarbonisation goals.
