In the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India condemned the ongoing hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz describing it as deeply concerning and called for the re-establishment of unrestricted transit and maritime trade across regional international waterways.
Describing West Asia as a region of immense importance to India, Permanent Representative of India to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish stated, “After a brief pause in the ongoing conflict in the region, there has been a worrying resumption of attacks and escalation of hostilities. This is deeply concerning and India calls for an immediate de-escalation of tensions.”
While addressing the conflict in West Asia on Tuesday, he expressed India's firm disapproval of attacks in the strait against multiple ships such as GFS Galaxy, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa.
“Several Indian citizens were injured, including some seriously, one Indian tragically lost his life, and one is missing, in these attacks. India has consistently condemned acts of violence targeting seafarers and disrupting free and safe navigation through international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
Harish asserted that attacking commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end. He also mentioned that India firmly endorses a resume of negotiations for re-establishment of peace, security and stability in the region.
Harish emphasised that India has a major stake in regional peace and stability, underscoring that the country's trade networks and energy supplies are deeply connected to West Asia.
