India has crossed 300 GW of non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity as of July 31, 2026, marking a major milestone in its clean energy transition and climate action journey, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has said.
According to the ministry, the achievement represents more than 60% of India's target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity by 2030. Non-fossil sources now account for over 54 percent of the country's total installed power generation capacity of around 552 GW.
MNRE said the milestone reflects the impact of policy measures aimed at accelerating renewable energy deployment, strengthening domestic manufacturing and building an Aatmanirbhar energy ecosystem.
Solar energy continued to drive capacity additions, with installed capacity increasing to around 165 GW from 2.8 GW in 2014. Wind power capacity also expanded to over 58 GW, up from 21 GW in 2014.
The ministry said India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity during 2025-26, including 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind capacity.
Renewable electricity generation has also increased significantly, rising from 190.96 billion units (BU) in 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in 2025-26.
To support the rapid expansion, India's domestic manufacturing ecosystem has also grown substantially. Capacity enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar PV modules has crossed 200 GW, compared with 2.3 GW in 2014, supported by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
The ministry added that it is also driving industrial decarbonisation through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, positioning India as a global hub for the production, utilisation and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
