India and Germany has strengthened cooperation on renewable energy and energy transition, announcing new institutional platforms and funding commitments aimed at accelerating deployment of clean power, energy storage and green hydrogen.
The announcements were made during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s first official visit to India, which coincides with 75 years of diplomatic relations and 25 years of the India–Germany strategic partnership.
A key outcome was a €1.24 billion commitment under the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP) to support renewable energy, green hydrogen, energy storage, electric mobility under PM e-Bus Sewa, and climate-resilient urban infrastructure.
The two sides also announced the establishment of an India–Germany Centre of Excellence in Renewable Energy, envisioned as a shared platform for technology development, innovation and capacity building to support large-scale clean energy deployment.
Addressing a joint press conference in Gandhinagar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said stable policies and transparent markets have helped position India as a major destination for clean energy investment. He noted that bilateral trade has crossed $50 billion, with a growing share linked to energy transition and advanced manufacturing.
Technology cooperation to strengthen clean energy supply chains featured prominently, with joint declarations of intent adopted on semiconductors, critical minerals and telecommunications. An India–Germany Semiconductor Ecosystem Partnership was launched to support emerging technology ecosystems relevant to the energy transition.
The leaders said India is prioritising energy storage deployment, grid modernisation and Green Energy Corridors to enable higher renewable penetration, alongside expansion of domestic manufacturing across solar, wind, batteries and electrolysers.
People-centric aspects of the transition were also highlighted, including a global skills partnership and the establishment of a National Centre of Excellence for skilling in renewable energy in Hyderabad, aimed at building a future-ready clean energy workforce.
