India and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in renewable energy and green hydrogen, identifying large-scale solar initiatives as a key area of collaboration under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kuala Lumpur, the two sides noted the progress made by Malaysian energy majors PETRONAS and Gentari in India’s renewable energy and green hydrogen sector. The joint statement said both leaders “emphasised the vast potential for further collaboration in large-scale solar energy initiatives, leveraging Malaysia’s expertise to drive clean energy solutions.”
Malaysia also conveyed appreciation for India’s role in establishing the International Solar Alliance, acknowledging New Delhi’s leadership in promoting global solar adoption.
Energy cooperation formed part of broader economic engagement between the two countries. The leaders encouraged greater collaboration and investments across priority sectors including infrastructure, energy, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, digital economy and green technologies.
The discussions took place during Modi’s two-day official visit to Malaysia from February 7–8, aimed at consolidating the India–Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership elevated in August 2024. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expand cooperation across multiple domains, with clean energy identified as an important area of bilateral engagement.
