India entered a new partnership with Mauritius through the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and an agreement, both strengthening the energy security.
The MoU on Cooperation in the oil and gas sector between India and Mauritius is expected to ensure cooperation between the two countries in the supply of petroleum products and strengthen the energy security of Mauritius.
As for the exchange of Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) between the State Trading Corporation (STC) and the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), it will ensure that Mauritius has continuity and security of supply of White Oil products.
Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas observed that the MoU on oil and gas cooperation and the accompanying SAP as a powerful testament to the deep trust, dependability, and enduring partnership between India and Mauritius. He emphasised that this energy alliance is built on a long-standing foundation, with India consistently serving as a reliable partner in meeting Mauritius' energy needs.
Puri pointed out that Mauritius’ fuel security will now rest on the assurance of the five-year supply commitment of the Indian oil cooperation covering the entirety of the import requirement of Mauritius.
He also informed that it is the first agreement of its kind that the Indian public sector oil company has concluded outside south Asia, which he underpinned is a testament of Mauritius’ privileged relations with India. “This milestone in our energy partnership is yet another expression of a truly special friendship that will continue to flourish through generations.”
Mauritius’ Prime Minister Ramgoolam highlighted that this event is another strong testimonial of the enduring partnership between India and Mauritius, underpinning the deep-rooted ties and exemplary relations shared by the two nations. "Since 2025, our partnership has evolved into a strategic relationship encompassing cooperation in infrastructure, health, education, maritime security and sustainable development, with this new collaboration in energy security adding yet another dimension to it.”
Ramgoolam indicated that the partnership is of strategic importance for Mauritius as it safeguards the energy security of the island nation, reinforcing the resilience of the economy while further strengthening the trust and solidarity uniting India and Mauritius.
He added, the partnership has arrived at a critical juncture, with the impacts of the ongoing geopolitical tensions on the global energy market. Through this partnership, Mauritius will now benefit from continuity of energy supply, will be able to safeguard its economy, shield citizens from external disruptions, and continue its trajectory towards sustainable growth.
