India’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity must rise to 888 GWh by 2035-36, to meet future energy demands, as per a latest report.


According to the report released by India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) and Customized Energy Solutions (CES), India’s BESS capacity surged to 8.7 GWh from 0.78 GWh in the first half of the year.


The report further noted issuance of 47 GWh in new tenders during the first half of 2026 pushing India’s total storage pipeline to 260 GWh. Moreover, 18 BESS projects have been commissioned, with 70 percent of recent capacity additions coming from merchant installations.


India’s current lithium-ion battery cell capacity currently lies at 2 GWh, and it is aimed to reach 110 GWh capacity by 2030, the report also states, adding that India’s total capacity spanning cell production, pack assembly, and containerised storage integration is projected to hit 180 to 200 GWh by 2030.
