India’s power sector could attract investments of nearly $500 billion over the next seven years, Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal has said, outlining opportunities across generation, transmission, distribution and energy storage.

Lal said India has an estimated investment potential of $346 billion in electricity generation, $68.2 billion in transmission and distribution, and $35.2 billion in energy storage.

Highlighting the transformation of the sector, he said India has moved from addressing chronic power shortages to managing surplus capacity and improving system resilience. “There was a time when our discussions centred on bridging shortages and meeting basic needs. Today, we are talking about managing surplus, ensuring resilience and delivering universal excellence,” he said.

Added Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal, the country remains a high-growth electricity market with significant untapped potential. “India is a high-growth market with huge, untapped potential wherein opportunities are immense,” he said.

According to the union minister, India’s power shortage has declined sharply from 4.2 percent in 2014 to 0.03 per cent in 2025, reflecting improvements in capacity addition, grid expansion and system management.
