India has approved 18-hour daily power exports to Nepal till December 31, providing up to 654 MW to help address electricity shortages caused by recent flood damage to the country's hydropower infrastructure.
The Ministry of Power has accorded approval for the export of power for eighteen hours a day to Nepal Electricity Authority from 13 September 2026 to 31 December 2026. The Ministry said approval has been given for upto six hundred Megawatt of export through Muzaffarpur - Dhalkebar line and upto 54 Megawatt through Tanakpur - Mahendranagar line.
The recent floods have caused significant damage to the hydropower infrastructure of Nepal, reducing its domestic power generation capacity, while also creating an additional requirement for electricity.
The Ministry said that the action will help Nepal meet its power requirements during this tough time and further strengthen the close bonds between India and Nepal. India stands committed in supporting the neighbour and further strengthening the bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
