In a bid to support the country’s Net Zero emission target by 2070, the Ministry of Science & Technology has released India’s first R&D roadmap for Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), The roadmap, prepared by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), was launched recently.
Prof Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, described the roadmap as a structured framework to strengthen collaboration, guide investment and accelerate CCUS deployment. He said the initiative aligns with India’s decarbonisation strategy and the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’.
Prof Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, DST, said the roadmap reflects seven years of DST’s work in CCUS and balances two parallel objectives: advancing current technologies toward commercial readiness and supporting breakthrough science for future solutions. He stressed the need for enabling mechanisms, including skilled manpower, regulatory and safety frameworks, and shared early infrastructure. He also noted that DST will support implementation through initiatives such as the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development & Innovation Scheme, which encourages private-sector-led industrial decarbonisation.
The Ministry said CCUS is critical for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as power, cement and steel. DST has previously supported CCUS test beds in real industrial environments to accelerate technology validation and scale-up.
