Atomic Energy Commission chairperson AK Mohanty and US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright held discussions in Washington on Wednesday to explore opportunities to strengthen India-US nuclear cooperation.
The talks were held on the sidelines of an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) initiative on offshore atomic energy technologies and assume significance as India targets 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
The expansion is expected to involve greater participation from both government and private players.
India’s Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, passed by Parliament in December 2025, has opened the nuclear sector to private participation.
The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) on August 17 launched public consultations on draft rules under the SHANTI Act, aimed at modernising India’s nuclear legal framework.
