US President Donald Trump has indicated that there is a prospect of signing a deal between the US and Iran by this weekend; however, Iran has said it has not yet decided on the deal.
If the deal is made, it will end the US-Israel-Iran war that broke out on February 28, which brought the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz under effective closure by Iran, sharply increasing global crude price and endangering the global economy. Around 20 percent of global oil consumption is handled by the strait, with south and east Asian nations heavily depended on the trade route.
“We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran. The strait will officially open as soon as we sign, which could be soon, very soon, maybe over the weekend in Europe," Reuters quoted Trump as saying. When queried by a reporter at the White House whether the deal had been approved by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the US President said, “I understand the answer is yes.”
President Trump has been claiming that a peace deal with Iran to end the war is around the corner since mid-March. Recently, the US and Iran have engaged in strikes, which have violated a ceasefire reached in April.
