The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has enabled zero electricity bills for more than 7.7 lakh households as rooftop solar installations gather pace under the flagship residential solar programme.
Launched in February 2024, the scheme aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households by FY 2026–27, with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore. As of December 9, 2025, 19,45,758 rooftop solar systems have been installed across the country, benefitting 24,35,196 households.
Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha said that ₹13,926 crore has been disbursed as subsidy support under the scheme, while over 8.3 lakh collateral-free loan applications have been sanctioned to facilitate adoption.
To improve affordability, beneficiaries are eligible for collateral-free loans at an interest rate of 5.75 percent for rooftop solar installations, in addition to central financial assistance. The government has also issued guidelines for deploying rooftop systems through Utility Led Aggregation and Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) models to support rural households and economically weaker sections.
State and union territory-wise details of installations, households reporting zero electricity bills, subsidy disbursements and loans sanctioned have been provided in the scheme’s annexure.
