The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has launched PNG Drive 2.0, a three-month nationwide campaign aimed at accelerating the adoption of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and expanding Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure across the country. The initiative, running from January 1 to March 31, 2026, seeks to widen domestic PNG connections, boost commercial and industrial use of natural gas, activate dormant links and strengthen the CNG station network under the taglines ‘PNG ke sath Non Stop Zindagi’ and ‘CNG ke sath Non Stop Zindagi’.


PNGRB said the programme is aligned with India’s climate commitments, including achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070 and reducing GDP emission intensity by 45 percent from 2005 levels by 2030. The city gas distribution sector is expected to be one of the fastest-growing consumers of natural gas and a key contributor to cleaner urban energy.


The regulator has authorised city gas distribution entities in 307 geographical areas, covering the entire mainland through competitive bidding. These companies are developing local pipeline grids, CNG stations and PNG connections for households, commercial establishments and industries. The network is supported by 32,667 km of common carrier natural gas pipelines operated by 14 entities.


An industry committee comprising major CGD firms will oversee the campaign, with intensified activity planned in 110 focus areas. The programme includes consumer incentives, awareness drives and engagement with resident and trade bodies to highlight the economic and environmental benefits of natural gas.


PNGRB said a key target is to extend pipeline connectivity to 37 geographical areas not yet linked to the national grid and bring 44 uncovered districts onto the PNG map. Daughter booster CNG stations will also be upgraded to online mode to ensure uninterrupted supply. The regulator added that wider gas adoption would reduce reliance on polluting fuels, cut logistics costs and support India’s transition to a cleaner and more secure energy system.
