During the April-June quarter of this year, India generated 1,37,813 MU of renewable energy. This is a 15.1 percent increase during the same period of last year. Western India, especially Gujarat and Rajasthan, has led the expansion, while consolidating its position among the country’s leading renewable power producers. The northern region remains the largest contributor to renewable generation. However, the region’s overall growth was moderated by lower output from Himalayan states.
The growth story of renewable energy was anchored by solar power. During April-June 2026, the western region almost doubled its generation. Gujarat emerged as the state that recorded the largest increase in output. Rajasthan continued to be one of India’s largest solar-producing states. Reflecting sustained solar generation growth, the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh registered robust gains.
A look at the country’s wind generation landscape, a measured picture emerges. The western and southern regions concentrated over 90 percent of output. While Gujarat consolidated its leadership in wind generation, Rajasthan remained on an expansion spree. Presenting a contrasting picture, Tamil Nadu registered lower wind generation during the April-June 2026, although remaining the country’s largest wind-producing state. This shows the inherent variability of wind resources.
Cumulatively, the data depicts that the country’s renewable energy landscape is undergoing a broader structural shift. While solar energy is appearing to be a dominant driver when it comes to incremental renewable electricity generation, the growth of wind energy remains concentrated in established resource-rich states. Besides, eastern and north-eastern regions command a minuscule share of renewable generation. This underscores vast scope for regional diversification, as the country gains steam in the energy transition.
