Tata Power will invest ₹300 crore in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), strengthening Mumbai's surging electricity demand and reinforcing its grid.

The company will roll out 100 MW/200 MWh of battery storage capacity across generation, grid-level and consumer-end applications, Nilesh Kane, Chief – Transmission and Mumbai Distribution, Tata Power stated.

He further highlighted that this rollout will stabilize the grid, improve demand flexibility, and cut power procurement expenses.

Moreover, The installation of BESS will support major demands of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region across the expanding municipal and suburban Metro rail network, and major urban redevelopment projects that are fueling a rise in high-rise apartment buildings.

With this deployment being Tata Power’s biggest and most widespread expansion programme in Mumbai, Tata Power will continue to scale up its network of power lines, substations, and supply infrastructure in order to satisfy the growing urban demands and support a maximum projected load of 2,000 MW in the next 5 years.

This capacity growth has been deployed keeping a note that Mumbai’s estimated growth of expansion power demand could reach 6,500 MW by 2031, creating a need for a strong, future-ready electrical grid.
