The US and Iran have decided to establish direct communication to prevent miscommunication regarding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, following the first round of high-level talks under the 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday.
ANI quoted the joint statement as saying, “In addition, a communication line between the parties has been formed for the period mentioned in paragraph 5 of the MoU to avoid incidents and miscommunications with the aim of safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.”
The discussion between the two countries took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere and led to encouraging progress, joint statement reads.
With the signing of the MoU, Iran promised to make sufficient arrangements for the safe movement of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz without charge. Considering the safety concerns in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran will also initiate the demining process and removal of technical and military forces within 30 days.
As per the memorandum, the movement of commercial vessels will resume with immediate effect, signaling normal trade and shipping operations on the important route. Yet, the Strait of Hormuz still remains closed as a military source told Iranian Fars News Agency. The agency further stated that the IRGC Navy is not allowing the movement of any commercial vessel, signaling that it is the response to Israel's continued attack on Lebanon and the failure of the US in fulfilling the agreement to end the war.
The summit on Monday marked significant progress despite the statement of US President Donald Trump, threatening to seize control over the Strait of Hormuz.
