Washington has carried out military strikes on Iranian facilities around the crucial Strait of Hormuz, vowing to persist operations, US President Donald Trump confirmed in a White House Address.
Trump also announced restoration of the blockade and claimed that the US has taken Control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Moreover, Trump stated that countries maintaining commercial engagement with Iran will not be granted passage through the strait.
This development is significant for India as although India’s direct trade with Iran is relatively limited since New Delhi halted crude oil imports from Tehran in 2019 following U.S. sanctions, any escalation that disrupts commercial activity in the region could impact Indian exports, shipping costs and supply chains.
Around 40-50 percent of India's crude oil is imported from West Asia most of which is shipped from the Strait of Hormuz, making the strait an important aspect of India's energy security.
